Netflix and 3 Song Night
Back in November when I got my first e-mail about Netflix's class action lawsuit, I ignored it because it didn't automatically switch you back to your old plan and I didn't want to be bothered with having to remember to do that. I just got an e-mail the other day saying that now they will automatically switch you back and I can't decide what to do. I love Netflix and I've never had any problems with them except 2 DVDs that were scratched (and this is since September '04). I feel like by being a part of the class I'm sticking it to them and I have no desire to do so. I have major guilt issues so maybe some of my readers can tell me if this is a non-issue or is my Netflix guilt justified?
I don't really have too much to say about American Idol last night. I was pretty bored and Rusty and I talked over most of the 3rd performances. Kat's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was great but I can't get past her smug attitude, especially during the judges' critiques of her first song. By the way, I heard on the radio this morning that she was caught on tape grabbing her boobs and saying that she paid for them. Unfortunately I think Elliott is going home tonight. He's my lesser of 3 evils. I like his voice and I like him, but he's so boring to me. No matter who goes home, it won't affect the fact that there has only been 1 year when I cared about someone in the final 2, and that's last year.

Last night was definitely a joke and they totally set it up for Taylor to waltz (or gyrate) into the finals.
OK, that Clive dude asks:
Elliott to sing a STEVE FUCKING PERRY song?! Perry is only one of the best rock voices in the history of music. No wonder he didn't do so well.
Then, this "genius" wants Kat to sing an R&B (!!) song by a GUY. OK, a little out of her comfort zone and I don't blame her at all for speaking out when they questioned the song choice.
So, I'm expecting Clive to pick something like a Bjork song for Taylor to sing to make things fair and ge gives Taylor the juiciest softball in the world. A Springsteen song?? Good lord. No wonder he nailed it.
And to add to the conspiracy theory that they want Elliott out is that they have the drunked up, drugged up judge pick his song for him...a horribly boring 70s tune. Not his fault again.
Taylor's self-hugging and puppy dog pout during "You Are So Beautiful" was weird to me.
I liked Elliott's third song. I liked the fact that he worked his name into the lyrics.
I'm tired of Taylor's schtick and he is, by far, the worst singer left.
And Kat's third song outfit was the best thing I have seen on TV since the Red Sox came back from 3 games down to beat the Yankees in the ALCS in 2004. Good lord, she was smoking. Xteen looks at me during her performance and says:
"You might as well say it."
And I reply, "Uh-uh. You're gonna hit me."
She said, "Go ahead".
So, I said, "I have this overwhelming desire to become a necklace."
Xteen said, "What, like a choker?"
And I pointed to the TV and said, "No. THAT necklace."
Anyway, Elliott goes home tonight and that sucks. Taylor/Kat in the finals and Taylor in a cakewalk. It ain't all about the singing.
- Not D.
I love Elliott, but it slowly dawned on me last night that I hate this season.
I can't STAND Taylor. He is a tool, and completely unnecessary in the competition. He will win, and I will be royally pissed.
Katharine's attitude was appalling and shameful. I wanted to slap her across the face. I'm not so cruel that I can't say she has a nice voice, but as a person, I think she's scum, and I'm not afraid to say it, no matter what Dim or Not Dim thinks. I'm ashamed for her behavior as a woman.
This is a sad, sad way for things to end up.
I don't mind Taylor's voice THAT much because I like people with voices that sound like they've been around the block a couple times. I can't stand his movements though. Even when he's singing a slow song. He always does thing thing where he puts is hand out, palm up. WTF?
Kat is beautiful and has a good voice when she realizes that she's not a belter, but her comments were unnecessary. She looked at Paula like you look at someone when you want them to hurry and finish a story. Her comment that they've been hard on her is stupid. Has she not seen this show in the 5 years it has been on? I'd venture a guess that she's never received anything but praise in her life. Then, "I didn't pick it!" Thank you, Captain Obvious. Yes, Randy is an idiot and that comment was dumb, but show some humility. I hate back-talking to the judges.
P.S. *small voice* I like "What You Won't Do for Love."
I really fail to see anything she said that was shameful, honestly. A criticism Randy had was that it wasn't a good song choice. She said she didn't choose it. That's true. Fault her for not singing the song well, but not for choosing the song. If someone told you you had to make a very specific meal, like lasagna say. And you don't happen to cook Italian very well, but you give it a shot and their criticism of you was that it wasn't a good meal choice for you to cook, I think you would react the same way. Granted, I am overly defensive of her because she's hot, but I think a lot of people don't give her the benefit of the doubt for the same reason. Taylor laughs and scoffs when Simon criticizes him. Never heard one thing said about it.
As far as Paula goes, I had the same expression on my face as Kat did because Paula didn't SAY anything. She stumbled and bumbled and said Kat looked gorgeous, but...and then never got around to really finishing it off.
I find that Simon and, in some rare cases Randy, are the only ones that offer any kind of constructive criticism. "It didn't do it for me" doesn't tell the performer what he and she needs to work on.
I didn't like her "You've been hard on me" comment as it sounded a little whiny.
I don't like it when she scoffs at criticism, but didn't feel like she did that last night.
Sorry for the long comment. Ever since I read Rusty's post on Viagra ads, my comments have become longer. Go figure.
It bothers me when Taylor does it too, but the other things he does bother me exponentially more than that, so I don't mention it much. And I think there's a difference between giving someone that hurry up look when you're talking to them privately and giving it to a person who is judging you on a television that millions of people watch.
What kind of a person likes a contestant based on his or her looks?! *coughAceYoughcough* Excuse me, this damn cold...
Do you play golf by any chance?
LMAO! Hilarious, Dim. I didn't even know you had read that post...
I stand by what I said about Katharine. Apparently, Dim, you were too wrapped up in her beauty to see the very unattractive faces she was making. I agree with Jen - I get the feeling she's never heard anything but praise and can't quite handle it when it's not all "Kat, you're perfect". Randy's comment was stupid, and I didn't say a word about what he said and her response...I agree with you. It was more her facial expressions of pissed-off shock that anyone could POSSIBLY say anything that wasn't glowing about her. And, um, they've been tough on her the past few weeks because she's been getting worse, not better, as the show goes forward. She's started sounding more like screaming than music, and overdoing everything. Bottom line: her singing was good last night...her attitude wasn't.
I still despise Taylor. His screaming of "Soul Patrol!" every 3 seconds is obnoxious, and I can't stand his writhing about as if possessed. I don't hate his voice, either (just as I don't hate Katharine's), but as a performer, I find him to be a tool. I'm sick of going over this topic...I just pretty much dislike this season at this point. *sigh* And yet I continue to watch.
Just for the record, and then I'll leave it alone, I really thought Kat oversang EVERYTHING last night (even the Rainbow tune) and has for the last few weeks.
And Rust, you should know that I read everything you write. I might just skim over some of the NASCAR and Saturday Hotness things, but I would hope that is understandable! But I always read your stuff!
I've been posting long comments for over 3 hours now. I need to go see my doctor.
- D.
I assume you read everything, but I don't know you do. And of course, it's understandable that you don't salivate over those posts...my blog is essentially my world, and I'm just letting everyone in. I have different interests than a lot of my friends. :) I'm just glad you come by, period. It's nice to know you always read my stuff.
Yeah, Katharine has oversung everything for most of the competition. It's annoying, because she has a gorgeous voice, and she should just be comfortable with the pipes she's got, not try to make them something bigger and better than they are.
I always wonder, Dim, especially since you say you're busy there...do you DO anything at work? :-P (I'm kidding, of course)
I heard that Taylor sang "Dancing in the Dark" last night. Did he sing it all upbeat?
LOL
That song has some of the darker lyrics Bruce has written and everyone sings it happy! WTF
Pete Yorn did a cover of it and nailed it! Real moody and slow.
Anyway, I have never been as happy as I am today that I never watch that show. I do know who that guy is and I hate him.
I think it's his hair.
In fact I may do a blog on him and his stupid hair.
When do we find out if he got kicked off?
You missed it. It was last night and he is staying. And probably winning the whole thing! Much to our chagrin.
The sad thing is that Clive Davis explained the lyrics to him and told him it's about a guy who is yearning for a piece of ass and he was still smiley and jumpy.
To me it's still not as bad as when last year's winner sang "Piece of My Heart" with a huge grin on her face. How can "Didn't I make you feel that you were the only man/didn't I give you everything that a woman possibly can" be happy for christ's sake?!
Dim's right; he'll probably win.
Well, Clive was wrong too.
Sorta.

Yes, the guy wants some ass but mostly to distract him from his hell hole of a life...for maybe just a few minutes.
It's a song about isolation really... The girl is really just a small band aid on a massive wound..
In the morning he still has to face himself in that mirror.
A very dark "pop" song. One Bruce threw in at the last minute when the record company asked for a "hit single"
Wish i could just throw something together and have it turn out that good!
LOL
