Books and Movies

I recently finished reading The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen and watching What's Eating Gilbert Grape? A couple years ago, I got this bug up my butt to read Oprah's book club books (even though I don't like Oprah) and this is one of the selections. The book was ok, but I didn't like any of the characters, so I didn't care what happened in the end. What's Eating Gilbert Grape? was ok, but I ended up fast forwarding at the end because it was drawn out and boring. It's been a while since I've read a really good book or seen a really good movie. Does anyone have any suggestions? I still have Fight Club at home and Muriel's Wedding should be coming by the weekend. Will see if I get winners this time!

Wanna see a classic? I recommend Imitation of Life. I've only seen the Lana Turner version but there's another one, too. It's a tearjerker, though.

If you want a hearty laugh, I recommend It Happened One Night, another classic starring Clark Gable. Swept the Academy Awards in 1934.

Have you read Fraud by David Rakoff? Or else, even better, strangely enough, is listening to him read his own book on CD. Christmas Freud ranks as one of the best short essays ever written in the English language. I'd also suggest for a good non-ficton read a book called Out of the Flames, by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone. I couldn't put this book down, even when I knew I should really be going to bed to sleep. It's a spellbinder for a non-fiction work.

For movies, I do recommend one of the first two movies from The Thin Man series, or most anything with William Powell. How To Marry A Millionaire is a fantastic comedy. Or delve in some of Jack Lemmon's work: The Apartment is an awesome movie to watch. Hm, what else? The Sweet Hereafter by Atom Egoyan is one of my own favorites of all time. Have you delved much into the works of Pedro Almodovar? He's always interesting. My official favorite movie is Like Water For Chocolate, and I have seen it more times than I can count. My supersecret unofficial favorite movie is Happy Gilmore, but I'd assume this a film you've already seen.

I've seen Like Water for Chocolate, but not the others (and I haven't seen Happy Gilmore, although I look forward to seeing Bob Barker kick some ass). I'll have to check them out. Thanks!

goddess - Nope, I don't mind, and I'll add yours when I get a chance :-)
