Oh, snap!

I'm sure katie will have something similar posted soon, as I am well aware of her Tom Cruise love, but this is too funny to pass up. Friday morning's Today Show portrayed a rather awkward interview between Matt Lauer and Tom Cruise, in which Matt Lauer used the phrase, "googley-gook." The argument was about the use of psychiatric drugs, something that $cientology doesn't support.

This interview was a hilarious trainwreck. Tom Cruise is such an idiot! He spoke out against electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which is rarely used, but can work if used correctly; Adderall and Ritalin because they are sold as street drugs (which has what to do with their effectiveness in treating ADHD, Tom?); and psychiatry in general. Dr. Cruise also tells us that there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance; in other words, mental disorders are all in one's head. If that's the case, then why are monozygotic (identical) twins twice as likely to both have a unipolar disorder (i.e. Major Depressive Disorder) than dizygotic (fraternal) twins, and about 3.5 times as likely to have Bipolar disorder? Why do alcoholism and schizophrenia run in families? Why do anti-depressants and anti-psychotics work? If I, with only a B.A. in Psychology and 5 minutes of research in my Abnormal Psychology textbook from college, can blow his theory out of the water, imagine the damage that someone with a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. in Psychology and years of published research under his or her belt could do? I wonder why no one from the field is speaking out against his propaganda?

You can read the transcript at the Drudge Report.

My mom told me about this interview. She said Matt came back really good and told him, "So, if you don't agree with it, it's wrong?" Or something like that, and Tom backpeddled quickly. I never really thought I was that fond of TomC, and now, I know why. I know that Rosie (O'Donnell) loves him, but why in the world would she?

i read about this and thought to myself: mr cruise has finally lost the plot, but then i'm not so sure when he was last in possession of the plot (other than a movie plot, that is)

Yep:

"MATT LAUER: But a little bit what you're saying Tom is, you say you want people to do well. But you want them do to well by taking the road that you approve of, as opposed to a road that may work for them."

I think Rosie thinks he's hot (ewww).

urban: he's definitely on his downward spiral.

I agree with you. I hate Tom Cruise, and some of his recent interviews have made me lose a lot of respect for him. He's extremely cocky, something that maybe all celebrities are a little bit of, but at least most of them try to conceal that to the public eye for crying out loud! In the grand scheme of things, some of the beliefs that Scientology teaches aren't very logical.

Scientology is a cult, and it's based on a work of science fiction. Key word: fiction.

I think Rosie's view of him has crumbled, as I read part of her blog post on perezhilton.com, I believe. You know, when I first read the line KATIE, I thought you were referring to Katie Holmes. :)

Nope, I wasn't referring to Tom's brainwashed girlfriend :-)

Yes, and the poor girl. I loved her for 4 whole years, I in fact wanted to BE her in the Dawson's Creek days. I can't believe she's converting for him...

I've never seen anything that she was in, but she looks like a nice enough girl. I heard Tom Cruise was also trying to get some other young actresses (Lindsey Lohan, Scarlet Johansen, Jessica Alba) to convert as well. Freak!!

I'm actually pointedly refraining from commenting, though it's killing me. Perhaps I'll give in, I don't know. Here's my favorite photo-fun version of the interview:

I'd tell you which photo is my favorite, but that would ruin the surprise, I suppose.

LOL I love that there's an Alton Brown pic in there.

Omess-I disagree. I think "Passion" was just a vanity project.

The Today Show did bring specialists on the program to discuss Cruise's claims. One of the PhDs agreed with Tom but then said it's for those in the medical profession to debate.

I'm just glad the world is finally starting to recognize that Tom Cruise is a screwball. I think celebrities are asked their opinion by interviewers so often, and with such reverence, that over time they start to think they're geniuses and everyone should be enthralled with every word that comes out of their mouth. It's so funny, too--who gives a crap what a movie star thinks about psychiatry or anything OTHER than acting (their one field of expertise)... and yet interviewers continue to indulge their egos and talk to them about matters they have no real knowledge of. Tom Cruise...what a dipstick.

goddess: I saw a link to the video of the PhDs when I was at work, but I didn't want to watch it there because I'm supposed to be, you know, working. I'm glad they stepped up though

karla: Your comment reminds me of Fahrenheit 9/11 when they show an interview with Britney Spears talking about George W. The world has sunk to new lows when people care what Britney has to say about politics.
